Match Report

Leamington 3 Droitwich 11

Leamington finished off their league programme with a home fixture against second placed Droitwich. The opponents have had a very successful season and have been pipped for automatic promotion by Sutton Coldfield by the narrowest of margins. In the away fixture in November, Leamington went down 15 – 14.

Both sides fielded strong sets of forwards and Droitwich were first to impress as they forced Leamington into some resolute defensive work. On four minutes they took the lead with a penalty goal and went further ahead on seventeen minutes with another penalty. Leamington began to impose themselves and play was concentrated in the midfield. With the Droitwich defence very flat, they were giving little opportunity for Leamington’s exciting backs to get into stride. However a clever ‘chip and chase’ by fly half Tom Secher caused problems and a short time later he coolly slotted a penalty to reduce the arrears.

Half time: 3 – 6

By the start of the second half both teams were getting the measure of each other and play was evenly contested. Both sides were very strong in defence and some formidable tackling was on show. This is an aspect of the game where Leamington excels, and today was no exception. Droitwich got the only score in this half, an unconverted try in the corner. Leamington pushed the visitors to the end with some incisive running, in particular by Preece and Magill. It was at this stage that the visitors proved their league position with some defiant defending.

Full time: 3 - 11

The defeat will not detract from the excellent league campaign Leamington have had this season. They finish in third place which is a monumental improvement from last year. As with all achievements like this it is due to hard work. Whilst Kit Forrest, Alex Carroll and Alan Roberts will be the first to congratulate the squad for their commitment, they too must be singled out as a major participants in the way Spa have turned their fortunes around. They have been supported by the ‘Seniors’ in the squad and seen the youngsters improve their game which in turn has been rewarded with call-ups to the full Warwickshire squad. All this has meant that ‘Moorefields’ has been a good place to be around.
